Senator Becker Speaks in Support of Senate Resolution 10 to Establish a Day of Remembrance & Awareness of the Injustice that Led to Incarceration of Japanese Americans During WWII

Here is the statement Senator Becker shared after the vote:

Today my Senate colleagues and I unanimously passed SR10 to declare a Day of Remembrance to increase awareness of the events surrounding the incarceration of Americans of Japanese ancestry during WWII as a result of federal Executive Order 9066.

Our awareness of the racist and  unreasonable fears that gave rise to this order 79 years ago is critically important today as we again confront ugly prejudices that have resulted in attacks on Asian Americans.

Last summer, I took my kids to visit Manzanar. It was a stark reminder of the wrongs committed against more than 120,000 fellow Americans. We cannot forget this injustice.

As we remember the past, we must also act decisively to address the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans and provide both support and protection against further attacks.
