Phones In Schools: No Cell From Bell To Bell?
Dear Friends,
The growing evidence that excessive smartphone use is associated with harm to a young person’s mental health has led us in the Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom to enact the Phone-Free Schools Act, a new law requiring schools to develop policies that limit or restrict cell phone use in public schools. California is at the forefront of a growing movement to get distracted students off their devices in the classroom and focused on learning.
To explore this issue further, I invite you to join First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Senator Henry Stern (Los Angeles) and me for a Virtual Town Hall on October 23. We will hear from UC Davis Associate Professor Drew Cingel about the latest research, and best practices on existing school cell phone policies from Principal Yvonne Shiu of San Mateo High School and Deidre Monarres, Director of Secondary Education, Ventura Unified School District.
I hope you’ll tune in to learn more about smartphone-free schools and how students, parents and educators are responding to these new policies.

Sincerely,
Josh Becker
