For Immediate Release
SACRAMENTO – “Today, one year and one day after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, the California Senate passed SB 2 to prevent police officers with a record of misconduct and abuse of power from hopping from city to city to escape the consequences of their actions – and offend again.
“I thank Senator Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, for his leadership on this important legislation.
“We must do our utmost to protect Californians, especially those of color who disproportionately fall victim to bad cops. SB 2 also protects the integrity of the majority of law enforcement who act with honor and deplore the bad cops who drag them down.
“SB 2 is about restoring trust and creating accountability in law enforcement in cases of serious police misconduct. California is one of the few states that do not have a decertification process. This is a crucial matter of justice and a crucial matter of equity.
“While I believe we need to continue to build greater detail around acts that merit decertification and extent of retroactivity that can be applied, I have confidence in the author to work with stakeholders as SB 2 goes forward to the Assembly.
“I’m proud to have voted in support of SB 2 today.”
