MENLO PARK – “Climate advocates and environmentalists have long awaited strong steps to curtail hydraulic fracturing and oil extraction in California,” said state Senator Josh Becker, D-Peninsula, the vice chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Climate Change.
“Governor Newsom’s moves today enable our state to firmly turn the corner on these practices and launch California in a new direction. I believe this transition away from fracking and to chart pathways to end oil extraction are the way to achieve lasting positive change for our environment and our economy while ensuring clean, safe energy for Californians.
“The governor’s directive to CalGEM, the state Department of Conservation’s Geologic Energy Management Division, will stop the issuance of fracking permits by January 2024. Doubling down on our environment, Governor Newsom also asked the California Air Resources Board today to analyze ways to phase out oil extraction in California no later than 2045. These moves are unprecedented in our country.
